Bonnet lock down

There are various fittings on the market from bonnet pins to flush catches and Dzuz type fasteners.

Fitting fasteners to the top of the bonnet with the locating pins attached to the chassis is a popular option.

Low mount aerocatches (pictured) keep the top of the bonnet clear and are a little trickier to fit but it can be done…

Before you start make sure the bonnet is all aligned and hinged with mounted rubber stoppers holding it at the right height etc

1. Mount the eye bolts first to both sides at the bottom of the radiator. You’ll need to get them really close to the radiator as it’s tight in there with the bonnet down. I made a bracket out of 3mm steel angle iron.

2. Mask up the lower parts of the bonnet and draw the trajectory of the (now mounted) eye bolt. You may want to angle it forward slightly to aid location with the catch.

3. Identify (measure) where the eye opening is, mark this on the masking tape and offer up the catch with the locking pin lined up with the eye mark then draw round it.

4. Cut out the hole - you’ll have to overcome FOFU (fear of f***ing up)! I used a hole cutter & abrafile and finished with a half-round file. Better to make the hole on the small side and spend the effort to file it out for a tight fit as the holes for the tiny mounting bolts are really close to the edge!

5. Mount the aerocatch in the hole. You may need to file down a notch in the backing plate to allow the eye to locate (depending on how tight it is) - Job done!

Mirrors

An interior rear view mirror is required even if vision is restricted from it. You can use the one off the donor, drill a hole in the base once you have ripped it off the screen drill a hole and mount it on the grp dash centre but upside down.

Using Rivnuts to secure wing mirrors to the top chassis rail is a good idea. Check position a few times before getting out your drill though, measure twice drill once! Wing mirrors must comply with the IVA regulations in terms of size and position in order to provide the correct field of view. You should check the IVA manual for this information to ensure your chosen mirrors comply. Ensure they have edges of at least 2.5mm radius. Long stem mirrors, a good choice.
