Rust Removal and Preparation

To keep your build cost friendly you will be reusing a lot of parts from your donor car, of which most will have seen thousands of miles in all weather and are probably not looking their best. For items such as wishbones you can of course buy new however this method gets expensive quickly, so here we will cover on the typical ways for getting those rusty parts back to a

Supercharging the Exocet

Firstly, you'll need to understand the principals of supercharging, and then (hopefully) it all makes sense which makes it easier to build – if you already know, then skip this bit!

Supercharging, like turbo charging is a method of achieving forced induction, which is essentially blowing air into your inlet manifold (this is why superchargers are often called “blowers”) instead of letting the pistons suck air into the inlet manifold – this is referred to as being “na…

Bonnet lock down

There are various fittings on the market from bonnet pins to flush catches and Dzuz type fasteners.

Fitting fasteners to the top of the bonnet with the locating pins attached to the chassis is a popular option.

Engine

Technically you can leave the engine very close to stock as the Exocet uses all the original wiring and sensors. However many builders will use the opportunity to refresh the engine as it's easily accessible, it makes servicing it even easier. As a minimum it's recommended to change the usual service items, timing belt, water pump, oil, spark plugs, and filters.

Floors & Sides

Currently supplied kits already have the floor cut or welded in if chosen, you can skip the first two steps if you don't need to cut your floor from sheet aluminium.

Cut the alloy floor as shown in the picture, you lay the chassis on the alloy, mark around it with a felt pen and then cut with a jig saw with a fine blade.

Mating the chassis

Before you proceed you might want to refresh the “skate” including the engine, clutch, bushes etc. You can read more about them from the main sections

Now you can lower the chassis on to the rolling PPF (power plant frame) and bolt it up. Use washers between the sub frame and chassis on the rear 4 bolts.

Issues and Solutions

Issues have been found with the wing stays:

The rear ones are not high enough to clear the tyre
The front and rear ones rub against the wheel (MEV suggest using hub centric spaces 25mm bit rubbish really) and the rear ones apparently now created using new process
Bending the wing stays to stop the rubbing against the wheel is likely to crack any powder coating if already applied
Some have been offered replacement wing stays originally free of charge but now not…

Where to Fix Earth Points

Earth points, I used just about all of the mev installed earth points which are m6 threaded welded on tabs, cleaned the flat surface of the tab first. I als0 used many of the mx5 multi way earth blocks which have the mounting tab on them, to bolt to the mev earth points. They can also be attached to rivnuts

There are several points worthy of note in the above picture.

	* The spacers on the back of the brake pedal are left attached on the driver side of the bulkhead. Normally these are cut off and placed on the engine bay side, depending on the steering column length. This is adjustable with a hammer as shown below!

We assume that you will take all precautions and use proper personal protective equipment, ensuring you and anyone present is not in any danger. Obvious dangers include parts snapping, flying objects, heavy weights, sharp edges, fuel and electrics, The suspension springs on MX5’s are highly preloaded, removing them with the body in place holding them down is the way to go in the absence of spring compress tools.
